But when you are Victoria Beckham, you simply have to go one better.
The designer jetted into New York yesterday carrying what may be the ultimate fantasy phone - a custom-made gold iPhone 4 costing a staggering £21,995... with a topless photo of her husband David as the screen background.
While smouldering pictures of the handsome sports star are a popular wallpaper option for many women, Victoria's is likely to be one snapped in the flesh.
Victoria flashed her couture cellular as she marched through JFK airport still in the leather trousers, blazer and studded Christian Louboutin heels she left Heathrow in.
The 36-year-old matched her gold phone with a striking gold bangle, and also added a warm scarf during the flight.
Victoria's luxury device takes weeks to craft and has 150 grams of 24 carat gold, according to the website of its creator Stuart Hughes.

But surprisingly for the luxury-loving Beckhams, she did not opt for the most extravagant product on offer from the range.
For £39,995 you can have your phone kitted out with '65 million year old T-REX tooth and meteoric stone.'
One of only ten made, a real dinosaur tooth is shaved into polished meteor stone sourced from Arizona.
But for those for whom the bones of extinct theropods and space rocks are not exclusive enough, Stuart Hughes also sells 'the world's most expensive phone.'

The 100 carat rose gold, granite and diamond iPhone is on sale for £5 million.
The Liverpool-based craftsman also makes luxury laptops, MP3 players, televisions and even cars and yachts.
Hughes doesn't appear to sell gold baby bassinets or diamond encrusted prams - yet - but he may well get into the market given that a well-heeled baby Spice is on its way.
Victoria isn't showing any hint of a baby bump just yet, and has been sticking to loose-fitting tops during her early pregnancy.

She appears to be taking advantage of her remaining weeks of fitting into her skintight leather trousers, which will soon be becoming a little too snug.
The Beckhams announced in January that they were expecting a fourth child in the summer, but have declined to comment on reports last week that the baby is a girl.
Victoria has often spoken over the years about her desire to add a girl to her male-dominant brood.
‘Everyone keeps asking me if I would like to have a little girl and I think, at some point, if I am lucky enough to have another baby, that would be great,' she said last year. 'If I am blessed enough.’

Victoria has been spotted looking pale and peaky in recent weeks but appeared to have regained the colour in her cheeks and was looking healthier than ever as she landed in New York.
Victoria is in Britain with husband David and children Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, eight, and Cruz, five, until the end of February while she prepares her latest collection for fashion week in London and New York.
David is currently training with Tottenham Hotspur before returning to the U.S. for the start of the football season there.
